Department of Veterans Affairs Orlando Medical Center at Lake Nona

Situation

The VA developed a state-of-the-art facility to expand high-quality healthcare access for nearly 400,000 veterans in Central Florida. KENPAT, an award-winning subcontractor based in Central Florida, played a critical role in constructing the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center at Lake Nona, FL.

The project won the 2015 Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Central Florida Chapter Eagle Award for Excellence in Construction, the Ceiling and Interior Systems Contractors Association (CISCA) Gold Award for Construction Excellence, and the CISCA Project of the Year.

Task

KENPAT installed nearly 600,000 square feet of acoustical ceiling tile and over 113 miles of ceiling grids.

The hospital’s eight emergency and operating rooms, along with intensive care units, posed additional challenges. Each room featured multiple ceiling-mounted track systems that KENPAT framed and fitted with precision ceiling tiles.

In addition to installing the acoustical tile, KENPAT installed wood ceilings throughout the facility. The main lobby atrium, reaching 100 feet in height, required KENPAT workers to use large scaffolds for precise ceiling installation. Two additional atria with wood ceilings in the building connectors reached approximately 76 feet in height.

KENPAT installed two types of wood wall panels, one metal wall system, three types of fabric-wrapped wall panels totaling 25,572 square feet, and two types of specialized “foam” wall panels.

Action

General contractor Brasfield & Gorrie engaged KENPAT to install all acoustical ceilings and wall panels throughout the facility.

The scope included seven types of acoustical ceiling tiles, three types of wood ceilings, and three types of metal ceilings. In addition to the ceiling work, KENPAT installed more than 25,000 square feet of field-wrapped fabric wall panels, custom-sized and field-cut wood wall panels, other acoustical panels and more than 6,000 square feet of specialized foam wall panels.

The building’s design featured specialized rooms with high-tech ceiling-mounted equipment, adding complexity to the project.

KENPAT installed two types of wood wall panels, one metal wall system, three types of fabric-wrapped wall panels totaling 25,572 square feet, and two types of specialized “foam” wall panels.

Result

After managing extensive government change orders from 2008 to 2015, the award-winning VA Hospital now serves veterans across Central Florida.

For its work on the VA Medical Center, KENPAT earned the 2015 ABC Central Florida Excellence in Construction Eagle Award, the CISCA Gold Award for Construction Excellence, and the CISCA Project of the Year Award.
