Situation

This 29,200 square foot, three-story masonry state-of-the-art facility consists of a black box theater, proscenium theater with balcony, three-level lobby with gallery space, a box office and many other features.

The general contractor, WELBRO Building Corporation, selected KENPAT to install metal trusses, gypsum wallboard, acoustical wall panels, acoustical ceiling, stucco and GFRC columns for the building.

Task

KENPAT was selected to install the metal trusses, gypsum wallboard, acoustical wall panels, acoustical ceiling, stucco and GFRC columns for the building.

Action

KENPAT’s work began building the interior finishes of the Harriet Coleman and the Johnny Holloway Black Box theater by installing a suspended insulated double layer drywall ceiling. KENPAT built a scaffold platform at the bottom chord of the truss on the sloping floor to access the top chord of the truss system for this installation.

One of the many challenges KENPAT overcame was to attach over 800 seismic vibration sound dampeners to the truss top chord to suspend the metal hat channel: 10 inches of sound batt insulation and 2 layers of 5/8” type X drywall.

The KENPAT crew worked tethered to the truss system and performed the installation for the materials.

The twenty-six radius sound deflection “clouds” were installed by supporting each with aircraft cable. KENPAT decided to fabricate and hang the drywall on the scaffold floor and then raise each section to the design elevation. Each corner of the small clouds (6’-4” x 8’-3”), are installed at different elevations. The large clouds (8’-3” x 36’ – 4”) were built and similarly installed.

At the front of the auditorium, the proscenium was covered by a stretched acoustical fabric system. This fabric system conceals the sound system speakers and another set of 3 drywall acoustic clouds.

Another obstacle KENPAT successfully overcame was to construct and tie in the walls that could not be completed due to the scaffolding platform and start the balcony framing, second floor rooms and second floor ceilings.

As this work was going on, KENPAT was also working on the wall framing at the ground and lobby levels. The work on the oval grand stair, the exterior walls and double radius vault ceiling above the grand stair in the lobby proved to be the focal point of this project.

Lastly, KENPAT installed the acoustical ceilings and acoustical wall panels. The acoustical ceilings were installed throughout the building, while the acoustical wall panels were installed in the gallery, orchestra pit and the back wall on the main floor and the balcony.

Result

Pre-planning, budgeting and labor assignments were at the forefront of KENPAT’s work on the Lake Highland Preparatory School Harriet Coleman Center for the Arts.

This was a fast-paced project, but all changes and surprises were successfully dealt with, and the job was finalized without any problem. For its work on this project, KENPAT earned the 2009 ABC Central Florida Excellence in Construction Eagle Award.
