DeLand Municipal Building
Situation
The city of DeLand, Fla. sought to upgrade its City Hall and Fire Department buildings while matching the existing architecture of its downtown. The general contractor, Clancy & Theys Construction Company, selected KENPAT to provide Gypsum Fiberglass Reinforced Concrete Columns (GFRC) and stucco for the exterior of the three-story DeLand Municipal Complex.
Task
The general contractor, Clancy & Theys, selected KENPAT to provide Gypsum Fiberglass Reinforced Concrete Columns (GFRC) and stucco for the exterior of the three-story DeLand Municipal Complex.
Action
The exterior of the DeLand City Hall building features over 400 pieces of GFRC. These pieces and their connections to the building were designed to withstand Florida's high winds and weather conditions. The panels were manufactured with a fine-textured coating randomly colored to resemble carved natural stone.
Each of the flat panels between the windows weighed more than 400 pounds. Hoisting these panels three stories high was a complex and demanding task. KENPAT workers installed each piece of GFRC from the bucket of an articulating lift. Each piece had to be precisely positioned and secured before the next piece could be lifted. This process required the assistance of a crane and operator, as well as a two-man ground crew, to support the craftsmen.
The design is meticulously crafted with an upper cornice at the parapet, a significantly larger cornice band above the windows, and a third cornice located below the windows. Additionally, there are panels situated between the windows and a series of flat panels along the parapet of the low roof area.
Result
The contemporary exterior of the DeLand Municipal Building was designed to complement the City’s historical downtown. KENPAT installed advanced materials on the building's exterior within a tight schedule. KENPAT successfully met the design requirements and earned the 2007 ABC Central Florida Excellence in Construction Eagle Award.
