The renovation and expansion of the Cornell Fine Arts Museum required seamlessly integrating the existing structure with the new addition while maintaining the highest architectural and craftsmanship standards.
This project required specialized craftsmanship rarely seen on modern construction sites, including the seamless blending of different plastered surfaces to ensure continuity between large adjacent panels and door frames. Due to scheduling constraints, KENPAT pre-ordered GFRC panels without exact measurements, requiring precise field adjustments. Additionally, KENPAT coordinated the integration of barrel vault ceilings, bulkheads, and mechanical and electrical systems within highly constrained spaces.
Because of the project’s nature, KENPAT’s subcontract work could not be completed in a continuous sequence. Additionally, supervision and skilled labor had to remain on standby, ready to return as needed to align with the construction schedule. As a result, the same team remained on standby to return to the job site on short notice, ensuring workflow continuity, quality, and adherence to the schedule. This placed considerable pressure on KENPAT’s management team to remain within the budgeted costs for the project. Despite these challenges, they were successfully managed, changes and unexpected issues were effectively addressed, and the account was finalized without any complications.
The renovated museum seamlessly integrates historic and modern architectural elements, preserving its legacy while enhancing functionality. The newly expanded Cornell Fine Arts Museum stands as a timeless fixture on the Rollins College campus. This exceptional work earned the 2007 ABC Central Florida Chapter Excellence in Construction Eagle Award.
